Colourful Frida Kahlo Party
Recently I felt inspired to create some new party invitations and a decor package for my Etsy store. Since the celebrated Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is my muse, I thought she would make for the perfect inspirational party theme - especially because of her bold and colourful persona.
My partner-in-crime (and XO partner too) Jessica helped with the styling and photoshoot for our Frida Kahlo-themed fiesta. The invitation was created for a birthday, but could easily be customized for a wedding shower, Cinco de Mayo or any other party really. I have been following the blog Yoga of Cooking for a while and just love Rosana's styling and photographs. I've wanted to try her chocolate cake recipe for a while, and this was the perfect excuse. It was delish - especially the added touches of cinnamon and nutmeg. You can find the cake recipe here. I was able to salvage the last few edible cornflowers from my garden and the bright blue added such a pretty touch of colour. Slices of dragonfruit would look amazing here too.
Many years ago my grandma gave me this wonderful scarf and it's been hiding in our costume box. We pulled it out and it made a very cheerful table covering to set the tone for the party.
The table settings included the cutest cactus napkins found at Winners. Pom poms thrown here and there add a whimsical touch and bring in that colour again.
As Jessica says, an event like this is a great way to have conversations around strong, independent and creative people like Frida. This book was an awesome find - they have a whole series of them featuring prominent women across all industries.
We are in a digital age, so photo props are a must!! These very Frida floral "headbands" were printed onto card stock, cut out with scissors and glued to a wooden dowel. The same was done with the very Frida uni-brow and the kids had a lot of fun playing with them.
Meet Lola. We dressed her up nice with some mums and carnations for a simple and inexpensive pop of colour.
In case you don't have a Lola, I created some digital Frida wraps that can be printed onto paper, cut out and adhered to a regular tin can. Fill the can up with flowers and add water for a really simple but effective centrepiece. The wraps come as part of my Frida Kahlo Printable Party Package - print and use as many as you want for your party.
Papel picado (paper cut-out banner) always look so pretty and festive! If you're feeling crafty, there are a few tutorials online to show you how to make your own. Or you can make your life easier and grab one from your local party supply store or Amazon.
In addition to the invitation, flower and uni-brow photo props and tin can wrap, the Friday Kahlo Printable Party Package also includes this 8x10 digital art print of a loving quote by Frida. This can be printed and trimmed at home and framed for the party.
Hmmm...I'm actually thinking I would like to throw a Frida Kahlo party of my own. Guacamole, tacos, margaritas.....anyone else in?
